After a long day’s work
She boarded the Cleveland Avenue bus for home
She took a seat in the first of several rows
Designated for "colored" passengers
The driver stopped the bus
He asked four black passengers to give up their seats
Three of them complied with the driver
But she refused and remained seated
She was tired of giving in…
The driver called the police and had her arrested
But when she arrived at the courthouse for trial
She was greeted by a bustling crowd
Around five hundred supporters who rooted her on
Thereafter she said: “At the time I was arrested,
I had no idea it would turn into this.
It was just a day like any other day.
The only thing that made it significant
Was the masses of the people joined in.”
